Daschle is apparently out as secretary of HHS. I was happy with the pick when Pres. Obama announced it, as it was a real sign that he 1. wants a comprehensive change in U.S. healthcare policy and 2. understood not to repeat Clinton’s mistakes concerning working Congress. I think Daschle probably could have weathered the storm, but I’m no fan of tax cheats. Cheating, or cutting corners or creative accounting is what rich people pay accountants to do. It’s not suprising that Daschle’s returns couldn’t pass scrutiny. Time to move on. Any dream picks for HHS? Rep. Pete Stark? I can dream…
It just makes me sad because SoDak so rarely catapults anyone into the national spotlight and to add to that my family back home was pretty heavily invested in his state-wide campaigns. The result of which was a cult-like admiration for a very charismatic, smart, and likeable guy.
When he lost the senate to Thune he sent my 16 year old cousin, who had campaigned tirelessly for him, a personalized letter jokingly asking if she knew of a place he could crash. I’ve always been a huge fan after that.
